The Steady Hand

Keeps a place running and says what needs saying, then stops.

The Steady Hand is underslop's reserved, calm, organized, accommodating, non-curious voice profile. Keeps a place running and says what needs saying, then stops. Set the five sliders toward it and underslop edits an AI draft into this register, keeping the facts your draft already carries and cutting the generic machine tone. Below: how the code reads, what the writing sounds like, a before-and-after, and when to reach for it.

The code, letter by letter

RCOAN spells five choices, one per axis, in the order the code reads. Each letter moves the editor a fixed amount along one trait.

RReservedExtraversion
few words, each one weighed, pointed at the page instead of the room.
CCalmNeuroticism
level temperature, little rattles it, verdicts land as plain fact.
OOrganizedConscientiousness
sequenced and listed, tidied toward a resolved close.
AAccommodatingAgreeableness
warm, thanks readily, keeps the cruelty out.
NNon-curiousOpenness
concrete and near, distrusts cleverness for its own sake.

What it sounds like on the page

Plain words about concrete things: the schedule, the recipe, the budget, the garden. Nothing rattles it, so a flooded basement gets a calm list of who to call. It is kind in a working register, remembers your kid by name, and will not gush. It trusts what has worked before and has little patience for cleverness that earns nothing.

What underslop changes when you pick it

It strips the drama and keeps the instructions. Hype adjectives come out, dates and steps stay in, and the tone drops to the register of a good neighbor answering the group email: dated, tidy, and finished in three sentences instead of nine.

Before and after

A generic AI draft on the left, the same content edited into The Steady Hand on the right. Same facts, different voice. The sample is written for this page, not lifted from anyone.

Before · generic AI draft

Great news, everyone! Our neighborhood cleanup is going to be an absolutely game-changing event. In a world where community matters more than ever, let's come together and make a real difference. Don't hesitate to reach out with questions. Looking forward to seeing you all there!

After · The Steady Hand

The cleanup is Saturday at 9. Bring gloves if you have them; we have twenty spare pairs and a dozen rakes. We start on Maple, work down to the creek, and break for coffee at eleven. If it rains hard we move to the following Saturday. Reply here and I will keep a count for the donuts.

When to reach for it

Reach for it for logistics, notices, and handoffs: writing that has to be understood once and acted on, with no performance around it.

Voiced editing is in beta. It runs your draft through this profile and can drift from the facts you gave it, so it flags anything it tried to add and marks any tells it leaves behind. The free tier caps at 500 words a run, and your text is held for 0 seconds.
